The Google Trends Game

Heute wird gespielt.

"Okay you guys, welcome to our new year two nineteen, hope you had a really good time during your holidays. Today, to get us all started, I would like to play a game with you - one that I've been playing with my students for the last five years. Let me introduce you to the Google Trends Game: As you can see, there is a table on the board, four columns with ten slots each, and the four columns are called World, USA, UK and Germany.

Everyone of us knows Google. Michael, please explain - in English - Google's functions. (...) Thank you! Yes, that's right, lots and lots of people use this search engine to look for all kinds of stuff. People around the world, people in the USA, in the UK and in Germany. Thousands of millions of searches are registered every year. I wonder what the most popular searches were in two eighteen?

Let's come to the rules of the game. We split the class in two teams, right here, Team Window and Team Door. Please group together so that you can talk to each other without having the other team listen in on your conversations! Yup, this looks great. Now, each team will get a chance to find the most popular search terms of the last year. You give me a search word - or words - and I will check with my lists. I am looking for the ten most popular search terms in each of the four regions World, USA, UK and Germany. The number one spot will earn you ten points, the number ten spot will be rewarded with one point. 

You just say the search term and I will fill it in, wherever it appears on those four lists. When one team had their chance, the other team will give me a search term, and so on. Of course using your cellphones isn't allowed - that is why I asked you to leave them on the teacher's desk at the start of the lesson. 

Okay guys, think about what the most famous search phrases might have been in the last year! And don't talk too loudly - you don't want to give the other team any ideas, right? Now, to make it a bit more about English: When you give me a term, I will ask you why this might have been popular over the last twelve months, so you'll have to explain it to me - in English, of course. In the second half of the time the points for the search results will be doubled and in the final quarter they'll be tripled, so never give up, even if the other team might seem to have the advantage!"

Natürlich ist es wichtig, dass ich vorher eine genaue Spielzeit festgelegt habe. Eine Unterrichtsstunde ist ideal, man kann aber auch abkürzen, wenn den Schülern gar keine Begriffe mehr einfallen. Ebenfalls selbstverständlich ist, dass ich mich im Rahmen meiner Vorbereitung mit den Suchbegriffen vertraut gemacht habe und weiß, worum es geht. Wenn allen die Ideen ausgehen, gibt es immer ein paar hilfreiche Tipps, die man reinrufen kann:

"You know, people always look for the names of celebrities who have just died or disappeared."
"Very popular are searches for blockbuster films."
"Did we have any natural disasters in two eighteen?" 
"Any popular sports events or TV shows?" 

Ich würde das Spiel nicht seit fünf Jahren immer wieder spielen, wenn es nicht spannend wäre. Das ist eine schöne Gelegenheit, die Schüler mal dazu zu bringen, Englisch zu reden, ohne einen strikt schulischen Kontext. Außerdem wird ihr Bewusstsein dafür geschärft, dass es auch etwas außerhalb ihres Tellerrands gibt, und dass Briten zum Beispiel ihren ganz eigenen Tellerrand haben - die UK-Liste wird meistens am wenigsten abgeräumt. Man kann auch gern einen Preis für das Gewinnerteam draufgeben, Gummibärchen oder sowas. Hier sind die Google Trends von 2018, falls Ihr das einmal mit Eurer Klasse testen wollt:
